Nelson

Nelson yachts and ships are an iconic name in the world of ships. The design for the best 'semi-displacement' shape was reportedly discovered by chance, when in 1958 Thornycroft noticed a 23ft wooden launcher, still on the stock, stuck behind the skeg. It proved surprisingly fast, and Thornycroft's later designs got the same concave in the barrel of the buttocks, but started about halfway down the fuselage. For a gentle head sea ride, Thornycroft designed slack bilges forward with a deep and sharp entry, and bilges that pivot very tightly towards the broad stern. The concave “buttocks” provide a very flat run and provide lift for full planing speeds when desired. A long waterline, moderate width, high bow and round bilge provide excellent maneuverability at all speeds.

Designed for fuel economy and a smooth ride at semi-planing speeds, Nelsons hold their speed better in heavy weather and are much more comfortable cruising than hard chine motor yachts.

There are a number of yards that use the Nelson designs in their ships, such as North-Line in Harlingen in the Netherlands and Aquastar on the island of Guernsey.
